Piombino is a city with two faces: on one side the port, one of the busiest on the Tyrrhenian for connections to Elba; on the other a historic centre rich in history, linked to ironworking and Medici and Napoleonic rule. Its position on the headland offers views over the Tuscan archipelago and the Aeolian Islands, visible on clear days.
The port is the embarkation point for ferries and hydrofoils to Portoferraio, Rio Marina, Cavo and other Elban destinations. In high season it's worth arriving early for parking and tickets; many companies allow online booking. Beside the pier, the seafront and harbour venues animate the evening with the scent of fish and strolls towards Piazza Bovio.
The historic centre preserves the Citadel, Castello Museum and Teatro Verdi; walls and viewpoints tell centuries of disputes for control of the strait. Piombino is also the gateway to Calamoresca, Punta Falcone and the Baratti and Populonia Archaeological Park, reachable in minutes heading south.
For agricamping guests, Piombino is a convenient base for supplies, services and evenings: supermarkets, pharmacies, weekly markets and seafood restaurants concentrate between the centre and the port area. Summer lines 016, 019, 02A, 015 and 13S connect Piombino to the rest of Val di Cornia.
In summer book ferries well in advance and check crossing duration and Elba landing port. To park in town, consider paid areas near the port or leave your car at the campsite and use lines 015 or 02A towards Caldanelle and Baratti.
For a different evening, stroll from the port to Piazza Bovio at sunset: the light on the sea and islands is spectacular. Ask at reception for updates on markets, summer events and museum opening times.
